Sonic Gives New Meaning To Hot Dog And Coke

Speaker: Welcome … Wah, Wah, Wah

Customer: Hot dog, please with mustard and onion

Speaker: Anything … Wah, Wah, Wah

Customer: Just Coke

Breaking Bad was filmed in Albuquerque New Mexico. One of the major story lines centered around the owner of a chain of chicken restaurants named Los Pollos Hermanos, whose owner happened to be a major player in the drug industry.

Last week, a Sonic restaurant in Española, a town located around 90 miles north of Albuquerque, also got into the drug business. Unfortunately, they did it accidentally.

Celine Gonzales rolled into the Sonic looking for a hot dog. As she bit into it she noticed there was a little something extra included. Was it jalapeno or bacon? Nope. Was it chili? Nope, it was a small plastic bag of cocaine.

I don’t want to point fingers, but nobody orders a hot dog at a Sonic. Still, a hot dog shouldn’t be treated like a Cracker Jack box, and the prize should definitely not be a bag of coke.

So what happened here, how did Gonzalez almost get the buzz of her life from a Sonic hot dog?

Well, after spitting out the bag, the police were called. Having watched Breaking Bad themselves, they ran a field test on the spot. Yep, it was confirmed to be cocaine.

OK, onto the security tapes and did they tell an interesting story. While watching tape of the cooks in the lab, … er,ah, kitchen, the story came together.

While viewing the security tapes, detectives noted that the cook made a “hand-to-hand transaction” with a female employee in the kitchen. The cook, David J. Salazar, then proceeded to make the hot dog for Gonzales when “his body language suddenly changes.”

According to the affidavit, “Salazar stops cooking and appears to be frantically searching the area as if he lost something.”

Hey, I can relate. I’ve panicked when I thought my car keys were lost and when I left my phone in a shopping cart. Sure, it’s not quite the same as losing your coke in a hot dog, but my heart was racing.

As a result of his hot dog misadventure, Salazar was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, which is a felony.

Gonzales didn’t waste any time seeking legal advice. Merit Bennett, who represents the Bennett Law Group is representing Gonzales, who is likely to make a claim against Sonic.

So what can we take away from this story? Well, obviously we see once again that drugs are dangerous and should not be taken, unless under the direction of a competent, licensed physician. Next, although many prescriptions instruct you they should be taken with food, … this is not what they have in mind. Lastly, don’t order a hot dog at Sonic.
