The Reviews Of Barbie Are, Well, Not-So-Good
We’ve got three of them for you, and they’re pretty similar – so much so that watching all of them will be a bit repetitive. But for three separate reviewers – Brittany Sellner, The Critical Drinker and Ben Shapiro – to make virtually identical points about Warner Brothers’ summer blockbuster starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken in what’s advertised as a family-friendly, funny film bringing the legendary Mattel girls’ toy to something like life is a bit telling.
And jarring.
[warning – there are tons of spoilers in the three reviews that follow]
Here’s Sellner’s review…
And this was The Critical Drinker’s take…
Finally, here’s Shapiro…
All three of these reviews say the same thing – this is a badly-written, offensively stupid, hyper-political and openly misandrist film which is due for a big first weekend at the box office thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign but will drop off the table in week 2, and will ultimately be forgotten thanks to its severe lack of quality.
And this comes with the stipulation that nobody really expected a Barbie movie to be serious or intelligent. It fails even under the standard that it would be an uncomplicated kids’ movie.
Yes, so far it has a high Rotten Tomatoes score. Whether that holds up is a question.
We haven’t watched it yet. We’re not sure that’s going to change. What we already know about this thing doesn’t suggest the expense of time or money on it.
