Trump is Back on Twitter/X
President Donald Trump is finally back on the popular social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Over the past decade, President Trump’s Twitter account has been at the forefront of American politics. Before he even ran for President, Trump used his Twitter account to criticize then-President Barack Obama in the early-to-mid 2010s. He then masterfully used his online presence on Twitter to skyrocket to the top of Republican primary race in 2016 and later won the presidential election against Hillary Clinton in November 2016.
We all know the the story of Trump’s 2016 election victory. However, Trump has undergone a bumpy ride on Twitter/X over the past three-and-half years. Today’s post will take a look at events leading up to President Trump’s historic Twitter/X space with Elon Musk two days ago.
After the January 6th protests occurred in 2021, Twitter’s management made an unprecedented move to permanently suspend President Trump’s personal account @realdonaldtrump.
Little did we know, President Trump’s final tweets on the day of January 6th, 2021 would be the last posts he’d make on Twitter/X for the next 2.5 years. Despite what America’s Regime media may tell us, President Trump only called for his supporters to peacefully protest the results of the corrupt 2020 presidential election. Nevertheless, the censors at Twitter in 2021 still decided to silence the voice of President Trump.
On January 8th (2021), Twitter published a blog post explaining why the company banned Donald Trump’s account:
“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them โ specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter โ we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence …
On January 8, 2021, President Donald J. Trump Tweeted:
‘The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!‘
Shortly thereafter, the President Tweeted:
‘To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.‘
Due to the ongoing tensions in the United States, and an uptick in the global conversation in regards to the people who violently stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, these two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the Presidentโs statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks. After assessing the language in these Tweets against ourย Glorification of Violenceย policy, we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service.”
No one is safe from the anti-free speech Regime in America—including the President himself Donald Trump. In an instant, Trump lost access to his tens of millions of followers on Twitter/X.
What’s worse is that all the other major social media platforms at the time also banned Donald Trump in 2021. YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat all banned Trump’s accounts following the January 6th protests—effectively censoring President Trump’s free speech rights for a whole year. Trump could only access his followers through email and the Telegram app in 2021.
The social media landscape was a censorship hellscape in 2021. Fortunately, one man helped bring free speech back to the Internet: Elon Musk.
The enigmatic businessman Elon Musk finalized the purchase of Twitter in October 2022 for a total price tag of $44 Billion. This hefty price tag allowed Elon Musk to reinstate many Twitter/X accounts unfairly banned by the platform’s previous leadership. In fact, Elon reinstated President Trump’s account in November 2022 roughly one month after purchasing the platform.
In two years after his reinstatement, President Trump remained off Twitter (despite his reinstatement) with only one notable exception: theTrump mugshot from August 2023.
Aside from that single post in August 2023, President Trump has not made any more posts on Twitter/X since Elon reinstated Trump’s account 21 months ago. He has remained loyal to his company Truth Social—which launched in February 2022. Over the past two-and-a-half years, Truth Social remained as Trump’s primary social media platform until earlier this week when President Trump started posting again on Twitter/X.
Over the past two days, President Trump has made roughly a dozen posts on Twitter/X and joined a Twitter/X space with Elon Musk in order to announce Trump’s return to this platform.
Trump’s first post back on Twitter/X garnered roughly 45 million views in the past day-and-a-half, and his space with Elon Musk boasts over 237 million views. Despite some tech issues to start off the Twitter/X space, over 1.3 million users (including myself) tuned into this historic broadcast.
If you haven’t listened to Trump and Elon’s conversation. Then, make sure to give it a listen when you have a chance.
Trump’s return to Twitter/X is a major win for President Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. Over the past few weeks, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has completely gained the momentum for this election cycle. Harris is a experiencing a massive bump in the polls and is holding large rallies—contrary to Joe Biden’s faltering campaign for most of this year. Everything seemed to be going wrong for Trump’s campaign in recent weeks, but his return to Twitter/X might finally be the momentum shift that he’s desperately needed.
We will have to see if Trump’s return to Twitter/X can boost his chances of retaking the White House in November.
