Postmaster General Pulls “NaNa-NaNa Boo Boo” While Getting Reamed By Congress
Louis DeJoy is the current Postmaster General. He is an American businessman currently serving as the 75th U.S. Postmaster General. He was appointed in May 2020 by the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service (USPS). Before his appointment, he founded and served as the CEO of New Breed Logistics, a logistics and freight company.
DeJoy is the first postmaster general since 1992 to have no prior experience with the United States Postal Service (USPS). He is also the first postmaster general in U.S. history to come directly from the board of a private competitor of the USPS, which operates as a public-private partnership. This connection has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, as his companies still hold active service contracts with the USPS.
Yesterday, he appeared before the Oversight and Accountability Committee on the Hill. During the hearing, things became heated between DeJoy and Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA). During that interaction, DeJoy gave himself an “A grade” for job performance. Obviously, McCormick disagreed with that assessment. McCormick accused DeJoy of years of mismanagement and the decline in usage.
“You were graded by the United States people, and they don’t use your service anymore.”
A couple of things about this exchange: These are two Republicans going at each other, which is something rarely seen among Democrats. Also, the USPS has been trending down for years, certainly before DeJoy took over.
In response to McCormick’s claims, Dejoy fired back.
“That is not true,” Our office is growing.”
“You are responsible for the fall of the Postal Service and the lack of accountability,” McCormick continued.
“This Congress is responsible for it falling apart. I am trying to fix the Postal Service,” DeJoy responded as the two exchanged accusations.
“Your reputation is done. Whether you admit it or not, in the military, if I have a skipper who things are going bad for, they’re a good military officer. But do you know what we do when things go wrong repeatedly? We relieve them.”
“You know what you do when a CEO repeatedly fails in that business model falls apart? Nobody wants to use that business anymore, and it becomes non-profitable. You fire them. You know what we do in government when organizations fail over and over and over again and become unaccountable and are not going in the right direction,” the congressman added.
Having heard enough, DeJoy then did something that will live on in meme lore for years: He snarled at McCormick, saying, “You’re talking to yourself.” He then put both of his hands over his ears, similar to what someone in grade school would do.
It was a bad look for DeJoy, infantile at best, and immediately threw the upper hand to McCormick.
“I hope you got that on camera,” McCormick said, turning to his side before he mimicked the disrespectful gesture.
“Georgians are sick and tired of delayed packages and lost mail from the Postal Service. We are last in services rendered, and when the Postmaster came to Congress to testify about these failures, he rated his office an A and covered his ears to criticism. Disgusting,” McCormick later posted on X. He even shared a video of DeJoy’s antics.
Naturally, DeJoy’s reaction was met with both disdain and sarcasm online. With that one gesture, DeJoy may have become the Bill Buckner of the political world. Unfortunately, it may also have cost him his position.
