Whitmer Doubles Down On Cooperation with Trump, Democrat Civil War Continues To Simmer
The approval rating for the Democratic Party is now below 30 percent. The left today represents nobody and nothing. The signature bill of the failed Biden Administration, the absurdly named Inflation Reduction Act, focused on what the Democrats refer to as climate change, an issue the overwhelming majority of middle-class Americans do not care about. The people of this country spoke loudly in November, the message the country sent was that they support Trump’s agenda, and the public also wants Democrats and Republicans to work together.
There have been 2 completely different approaches taken by the Democrats since Trump was elected. Some more sensible Democratic politicians such as Senator Fetterman of Pennsylvania have met with the President, and Senator Schumer also agreed to let Republicans get their continuing resolution to fund the government passed. Still, most on the left such as AOC and Governor Pritzker in Illinois have continued to fight everything Trump says and does. Pritzker even recently gave an absurd speech calling for mass mobilization against Trump. The pathetic governor of Illinois, whose family bought him the position of power he is in, has made fighting for illegal immigrants committing crimes the main issue of contention with the 47th President.
This is the background to Governor Whitmer’s recent decision to show up and speak at a public event in Michigan with Trump. The two former rival politicians warmly embraced and the Democratic Governor spoke at the event just weeks after traveling to the Oval Office to meet with the President and do a photo with Trump as well. What is interesting about Whitmer’s decision to meet with Trump a second time in a short time frame is that she made this appearance with the President even after most on the left attacked her ruthlessly for even giving the President of the United States the time of day. Whitmer is likely to strongly consider a run for the Presidency in 2028, and her recent actions have obviously been carefully calculated.
The Governor of Michigan was no friend of Trump in his first term. She was one of his fiercest critics and even struggled to work with him during the pandemic. Still, Michigan went strong for the President in 2024, and Whitmer has an obligation to represent the best interests of her state. She has clearly made a decision to move to the middle and not be held hostage by a left-wing mob that still thinks ignoring the public and opposing every action Trump takes is a viable path forward. Whitmer’s actions will likely pave the way for other Democrats to reject the radicals on the left as well if she is successful. The Governor of Michigan fought very hard against Trump and she also leads a critically important swing state, her actions will be hard to ignore if they yield both policy results and political dividends.
The Democratic Party successfully pivoted to the middle after 3 straight Presidential defeats from 1980 to 1988, but the base of the failing Democratic Party is much more radical and left-wing now. Whitmer’s actions are a clear political gamble, and the Michigan Governor likely has Presidential ambitions. The approach of Whitmer and Fetterman has been the opposite of the tactics used by more radical Democrats such as AOC, Senator Sanders, and Senator Warren. The battle lines are being drawn on the left, and this increasing tension will likely boil over into a full-blown conflict soon.
