DOJ Investigates Minnesota’s Anti-White, Anti-Male Hiring Practices

Minnesota is fast becoming one of the worst woke states in the country. The state that the Putz Tim Walz governs has decided to make it harder to hire whites and males for the sake of diversity.

How policies like this are ever enacted escapes me. Diversity should never overshadow merit or experience. Diversity just for the sake of diversity is not only blatantly unfair, but it is racist.

Starting on August 12, the new policy from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) will alter how hiring decisions are made when job categories lack diversity. The policy states:

“Hiring supervisors must provide a hiring justification when seeking to hire a non-underrepresented candidate when hiring for a vacancy in a job category with underrepresentation.”

“Hiring justifications must be submitted to and approved by DHS Equal Opportunity and Access Division (EOAD) prior to an offer of employment being made.”

The Justice Department’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division announced yesterday that it will be investigating the state of Minnesota, including the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). The investigation aims to determine whether the state has engaged in discrimination based on race and sex in its hiring practices for state employment. The DOJ alleges that the policy “seems to be part of a broader effort by the state to engage in race and sex-based employment practices in its ‘affirmative action’ objectives.”

The policy in question faced criticism this week after the independent media outlet “Alpha News” reported that they received an internal memo from the state DHS office regarding upcoming changes to their hiring process. The memo stated that “hiring supervisors must provide a justification when seeking to hire a candidate who is not from an underrepresented group.”

The DHS defines underrepresented as when: “the FTE (full-time equivalent) representation of one or more protected groups is less than that group’s estimated availability in the relevant geographic area and labor force.”

Protected groups include women, people with disabilities, and individuals who are Black, Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Alaska Native.

There are five key points in the new policy:

Hiring justifications are now mandatory in specific cases.

DHS hiring supervisors must now “provide a hiring justification when seeking to hire a non-underrepresented candidate when hiring for a vacancy in a job category with underrepresentation.”

Bottom of Form

That justification must be submitted and approved before any offer is made.

This policy applies only to job categories where there is underrepresentation.

The new rule applies only when certain protected groups are underrepresented in a specific job category. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defines “underrepresented” as a situation where the representation of one or more protected groups in terms of full-time equivalents (FTEs) is lower than the estimated availability of that group within the relevant geographic area and labor force.

Protected groups include women, individuals with disabilities, and people who identify as Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Alaska Native.

Hiring managers should prioritize interviewing candidates from underrepresented groups.

If three or more underrepresented candidates are in the interview pool, hiring supervisors “must offer interviews to at least three” of them. DHS adds: “Offering more than three underrepresented candidates’ interviews [is encouraged], as time constraints allow.”

Managers must provide clear, objective reasons for their decisions.

If a candidate who is not from an underrepresented group is selected, hiring managers must provide documentation that provides:

“objective reasons for selecting a non-underrepresented candidate over the most qualified underrepresented candidate.”

These factors may include minimum or preferred qualifications, interview scores, references, or results from background checks.

You must obtain approval before proceeding with any hiring.

The new policy states that “Hiring supervisors cannot make an offer of employment to a non-underrepresented candidate…before a hiring justification is approved.”

Any offers made before receiving approval may lead to delays or rejections.

In a joint statement, House Republican Leaders spoke out against several recent events involving state government. Speaker Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring) and Floor Leader Harry Niska stated:

“This week, Minnesotans saw exactly what happens when state government loses focus and accountability. The Department of Human Services is forcing illegal hiring quotas that prioritize ideology over qualifications… Taxpayers deserve a government that is fair, competent, and responsible. Instead, they’re getting chaos and mismanagement. Minnesotans deserve better.”

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks) also spoke out against the policy.

“This hiring policy is DEI on steroids, and people are over it. We all work hard to provide for our families, pay our bills, and leave a legacy for the next generation. No one should face discrimination or extra hurdles to obtain a job because of their skin color, gender, or orientation. Government must hire the best candidate based on character, experience, and merits, period. Governor Walz needs to immediately end this blatantly illegal and highly discriminatory policy before the state loses a lawsuit over his misguided progressive pipedreams.”

Attorney General Pamela Bondi chastised the policy, stating:

“Minnesotans deserve to have their state government employees hired based on merit, not based on illegal DEI.”

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division added:

“Federal law has long prohibited employment policies that discriminate based on race or sex. The Justice Department refuses to tolerate such conduct, and states invite investigation when they engage in biased hiring practices tied to protected characteristics.”

These policies, which liberal Democrats initiate, are not being done to increase diversity. They are trying to unseat the normalcy of Western culture. Imagine if a more qualified member of the state’s “protected group” was passed over, to include more whites, or if a professional sports team traded a minority for a white player just because he was white. The outrage would be palpable, and CNN would have its lead story for a month.

DEI is not only just plain wrong, it’s dangerous. There is never an excuse to hire someone based on something so superficial as race, gender, or sexual orientation. That is how disasters occur, by placing unqualified people into positions they don’t deserve.
