Lesson For Dems: Crime-Bad, Safety-Good. Criminals-Fear Good, Citizens-Fear Bad
Democrats and all liberals struggle with even the simplest things that rational people have no problem understanding. Based on that fact, we can deduce that Democrats and those on the left are not rational.
Take, for instance, the concepts of crime and safety. In its simplest form, it should be obvious that crime is bad and safety is good. Building upon that line of thought, it should be equally evident that if anyone should be fearful or worried, it should be the criminals, and not hard-working, innocent citizens living their day-to-day lives.
Sadly, that truism escapes Democrats who are involved in the judicial system. In far too many cases, liberal snowflake District attorneys and judges have created a revolving door process that puts criminals back on the street repeatedly. That, combined with their incessant calls to defund the police, has created a perfect storm of injustice.
However, never at a loss to develop new ways to make things worse, the Minnesota Star-Tribune reported that Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced this week that her office will no longer prosecute felony cases that emerge from low-level traffic stops.
What this means is that if a police officer stops someone for a broken tailpipe and then discovers that the individual has drugs, a gun, or something worse, Moriarty’s office will no longer prosecute the driver for the drugs or guns.
The reason, according to the Star Tribune, is of course “racism.”
“Law enforcement in the state’s most populous county has long disproportionately targeted minorities for violations like broken tail lights or improper turns.”
According to radio station KSTP, Moriarity issued a statement saying:
“No one should lose their life as a result of a broken tail light or because they have an item dangling from their rearview mirror. Nor should they be put through the inconvenience, humiliation, and trauma that results from being searched as a result of a pretext stop.”
A “pretext stop” refers to a situation where law enforcement officers use a minor traffic violation as a reason to pull someone over and search their vehicle for illegal items such as drugs or firearms. This practice has proven to be effective in leading to the arrest and conviction of several dangerous individuals, including D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad, Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph, and fugitive Juan Carlos Munoz, among others.
Moriarty clearly has a strong aversion to fighting crime. “Pretext stops,” when they occur, are usually for a specific reason. While criminals may not be the smartest individuals, they can become skilled at what they do. Therefore, officers often need justification to stop them as a preliminary step toward pursuing more serious charges. There are also occasions when an unplanned stop turns up something unexpected. In any case, luck or otherwise, police need every advantage they can get. What they don’t need is some snowflake DA, playing social justice warrior for the wrong side.
Moriarty also announced that her office is unlikely to pursue charges in cases where a suspect consents to a search without a warrant, which reveals drugs, guns, or similar items.
“Consent searches allow officers to bypass all of the usual investigative steps necessary to establish probable cause. Many people don’t feel that they can refuse a consent search because of the power differential or the concern or fear of what might happen if they say no.”
Really? Is this moron insinuating that people should fear the police? Has she ever heard that only criminals need to fear the police? If someone is doing something illegal, they should be fearful; otherwise, the fear is transferred to the innocent people who are endangered by their presence.
Moriarty’s far-left policies have sparked a strong response from the largest police union in the state.
Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association general counsel Imran Ali stated:
“The city of Minneapolis is under siege with violent crime — and this is what County Attorney Moriarty chooses to prioritize!?”
“Her new policy is a gift to criminals and a slap in the face to law-abiding Minnesotans. Guns, drugs, and fugitives discovered during traffic stops will now walk free, while officers are left powerless to act. This reckless decision doesn’t just weaken law enforcement — it puts every family in greater danger.”
Moriarity’s excuse shows her lack of understanding of police work; in fact, it is downright asinine. Believe it or not, this is what she told the Star Tribune.
“We’re not talking about dangerous driving behavior. When we’re talking about limited resources with law enforcement, you would rather have them focus on dangerous driving rather than these kinds of things.”
What is she talking about? Police use these stops for that very reason, to stop “these kinds of things!”
According to the Star Tribune, her new policy will address a range of infractions, including:
“Failure to display tags or driving with expired tags; failure to illuminate a license plate or a partially obscured license plate; broken headlights, brake lights or taillights; a missing side mirror or rearview mirror; items dangling from the rearview mirror; broken windshield wipers; failure to signal a turn or lane change while otherwise driving safely; cracked windshield; and excessive window tint.”
However, Moriarty has claimed she would consider exceptions in cases where a subsequent search of the suspect’s car reveals evidence that poses a threat to public safety.
How in the hell did this fool get to this position? She is putting every citizen in danger, with this ass backward approach to law “non-enforcement.”
It’s amazing that anyone could be this simple-minded. With this announcement, Moriarity is eliminating an inroad that law enforcement uses to effectively gain insight into criminal behavior at the very least, and at times, to stop it completely.
This kid-gloves approach to law is a smack in the face to law-abiding citizens and a pat on the back for criminals. Moriarity is going to get someone killed, and it’s a sure bet that she will deny all responsibility when it happens.
