Lisa Murkowski’s Opposition to the Critically Important SAVE Act Should be the Final Straw for Republicans
Donald Trump has outlasted nearly all of his political enemies. While Republicans such as Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney, and Jeb Bush have all left politics, the President’s Democratic opponents have largely disappeared as well. Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden are all either gone or, in the former Speaker’s case, about to retire. Indeed, one by one, the 47th President’s political opponents have slowly been defeated or rendered irrelevant. When Trump won the electoral college and the popular vote in 2024, the country handed him a clear mandate for his MAGA agenda, and the debate over the direction of both the Republican Party and the country appeared to be settled at least for the short term.
One of the few political opponents of Trump who remains in office is Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. The daughter of Frank Murkowski, the former governor of Alaska, has made her feelings about the President known loud and clear since 2015. The Senator has opposed much of the President’s legislative agenda as well as some of the cabinet appointments. She voted against Cavanaugh but for Brown-Jackson. Murkowski even voted to remove Trump from office in 2021 after he was against the victim of a sham impeachment effort by the Democrats.
Donald Trump and his legislative agenda have the overwhelming support within the Republican party, and support amongst the majority of Americans. The President has an approval rating of nearly 90 percent within his party, and despite the usual lies of the failing liberal media, most of the public supports Trump’s agenda, including deporting people here illegally. Murkowski was reelected to the Senate with just 137,000 votes, narrowly beating challenger Kelly Tshibaka by 2 thousand votes in the first-round voting, and 20 thousand in the final round. Murkowski is completely out of touch with today’s Republican party, she is only able to stay in power because of her well-known last name and the very small population of nearly 800,000 in Alaska.
This is why the Senator’s recently voiced opposition to the critically important SAVE Act should be the final straw for both Republicans and conservatives. Despite the usual gaslighting by some, the SAVE Act does not federalize elections, this piece of legislation would simply create the most basic federal standards, such as requiring ID and proof of citizenship to vote. The idea that asking American citizens to show a basic ID and proof of citizenship is overly burdensome in 2026, a time when the online process makes acquiring and showing documents very easy, is patently absurd. Murkowski has a long history of being a RINO, she supported amnesty in the past, and the senator’s personal disdain for the President is well-known.
While Republicans are obviously limited in the ability to primary or remove the Senator prior to 2028, conservatives need to step up the pressure on Murkowski to support the President’s legislative agenda and also put more effort into displacing her from the Senate. Murkowski is 68, there is a good chance she will retire before the next election cycle for her Senate seat, but conservatives need to have a plan if she runs again. The fact the Senator supported amnesty and even opposes basic voter ID and citizenship laws in the Republican party of 2026, shows how completely out-of-touch she is with today’s Republicans. Murkowski’s opposition to the SAVE Act should be the final straw for conservatives, and there should be a more intense and well-organized effort to make the public aware of how absurd her positions on many of the most important issues today are.
