PRESERVE ALL RECORDS: Royce White Just Put The WNBA On Notice After Being Denied Draft Eligibility
Here is what happened. White declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft while identifying as a woman.
League sources told media outlets that White and former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom are both ineligible, and described their declarations as publicity stunts.
Yet the league has sent no official notice to White or his legal team.
Attorney Matt Gaetz says that silence breaks with the leagueโs own standard practice, and he is preparing for court.
The WNBA now faces a question it has spent years refusing to answer.
Its collective bargaining agreement states that only โplayers who are womenโ are eligible. The agreement never defines the word. A league built entirely on womenโs basketball cannot tell you, in writing, what a woman is.
The league painted itself into this corner. For years, the sports establishment told Americans that gender is a matter of self-identification.
Anyone who says she is a woman must be treated as one, we were told, and asking questions makes you a bigot.
Royce White took them at their word. He is 6-foot-8, played forward for the Sacramento Kings, and now identifies as a woman. By the leagueโs own stated logic, on what grounds is he ineligible?
The WNBA knows the answer.
A woman is an adult female human being, and Royce White is not one.
But the league cannot say that out loud without admitting that biological sex is real and that it matters in sports. So instead of putting its standard in writing, it leaks anonymous statements to reporters and hopes the story goes away.
That approach has now earned the league a litigation threat from a former member of Congress.
The women who actually play in this league deserve better than this dodge.
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said it plainly back in July: โI want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldnโt have to go against biological men.โ
She said that knowing the backlash that follows any athlete who states the obvious.
More players should follow her lead.
The physical differences between men and women in sports are documented and permanent.
Men on average are taller, faster, and stronger, with greater bone density, larger hearts, and more muscle mass.
Those advantages do not disappear with a new name or a new pronoun. They are the entire reason womenโs sports exist as a separate category.
Erase the categoryโs definition and you erase the category.
This fight did not start in the WNBA, and it will not end there. Parents have watched it play out in high school track meets and college swimming pools for years. Girls have lost races, records, roster spots, and scholarships to male athletes.
President Trump signed an executive order in 2025 to keep men out of womenโs sports, and dozens of states have passed protections of their own.
Professional leagues are now the ones lagging behind the country.
Whatever anyone thinks of Whiteโs tactics, he has exposed something the league cannot hide from any longer.
A league that cannot define โwomanโ cannot protect women. If the WNBA fights this case by arguing that White is a man, it concedes the point that female athletes and their parents have been making all along.
If it refuses to make that argument, it has no ground to exclude him.
There is no third option, and that is exactly the trap the league built for itself.
The path forward is simple.
The WNBA should amend its agreement to state clearly that eligibility is based on biological sex.
Every womenโs league in America should do the same, from youth soccer to the pros.
Women earned their leagues, their scholarships, and their records through decades of work. Protecting them should never have required the threat of a lawsuit to force the issue.
The league has a choice to make.
It can keep hiding behind anonymous sources, or it can stand up in public and defend womenโs sports with a clear, honest standard.
Fans, players, and parents are watching to see which one it picks.
