Trump Debates Mumbles In Atlanta

On Thursday night, former President Donald Trump debated President Joe Biden in Atlanta. According to the overwhelming reaction to the debate, Trump easily won as Biden came off as weak, confused, and incoherent.

Biden, who will be referred to as Mumbles a’la the character from the Dick Tracey comics and movie, performed so poorly that Democrats were calling for Mumbles to be replaced at the Democratic National Convention. In addition to sounding bad, Mumbles just looked terrible.

The “highlights” of Mumbles’s poor debate performance included things like this:

Before I go into my round up of the debate between Trump and Mumbles, here is some of the debate roundup from pundits I saw on Twitter:

Mumbles did so badly that we’re calling him Mumbles. He looked and sounded weak, frail, confused, and unprepared. It was difficult to understand Mumbles when was talking. In addition to sounding like a corpse, Mumbles looked like a corpse. Mumbles could not land a jab on Trump on issue after issue. This was a disastrous performance and will only increase the chatter of replacing Mumbles at the convention.

Now on to President Trump’s performance. This was likely Trump’s best performance in a debate since he came down the escalator at Trump Tower in 2015. Trump was mostly on message and very disciplined. He did not come off as unhinged which will reassure many votes on the fence between the two candidates. The only complaint I would have about Trump’s performance is that he faded and rambled more as the debate went on. Nor was he able to land a jab as cleanly as he should.

Now there was some concern about Trump’s answers on the answers on the issues raised in some focus groups, but we’ll see how the polling shakes out in a week or so.

Unfortunately, both men came off as too negative and spent way too much time on the past. Both men also lied repeatedly in their answers. I’m not so sure that this debate moved the needle a whole lot among truly undecided voters.

As for the Democrats replacing Mumbles at the DNC, I still wouldn’t count on that. The only way Mumbles is getting replaced is if Mumbles decides to step down as a candidate. Realistically, the only person who is replacing Mumbles is Vice President Kamala Harris and she is even more disliked more than he is. Any other Democrat would start off with a huge name ID and fundraising disadvantage and not a lot of time to change that.

My final debate grade scorecard:

Mumbles: F
Trump: C

Mumbles’ performance was historically atrocious. The regime media and Mumbles’ camp are claiming that his poor performance was because he had a cold. But Mumbles’ problem was that American voters already saw him as weak, old, and incompetent. The only positive about Mumbles’ performance was that he slightly improved towards the end.

As for President Trump, he gets a C. It was an adequate performance but not great. A better debate opponent would’ve punished Trump on many instances. But you ultimately debate who you have in front of you and team Trump should be pleased with this performance. Finally, Trump was on message and disciplined. Again, Trump faded towards the end.

Another possible winner is Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. because he may get another look from voters who don’t want either Trump or Mumbles.

As for the CNN moderators, they did fine. They asked tough questions of both candidates and generally let them go at each other. This is all that could be expected from a moderator.

I have good news for America. This will likely be the final debate of the year. I just don’t see Trump or Mumbles wanting to go for another round.
