The 2024 DNC protests & a 1968 DNC Redux?

The year was 1968. Current incumbent president Lyndon B. Johnson decides he will not run for re-election on March 31st, 1968. His low approval ratings and the unpopularity of the Vietnam War encouraged LBJ to drop out of the presidential election.

After LBJ dropped out, then-VP Hubert Humphrey jumped into the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination race and eventually won the nomination.

In August 1968, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) was set to take place in the city of Chicago. 1968 was already a tumultuous year in America. The assassinations of national figures Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy shocked the nation earlier in the year. Add those tumultuous events on top of the large protests against the Vietnam war, and you’ll find a chaotic backdrop was set in place for the 1968 DNC.

During the ’68 DNC, thousands of police officers were deployed and infamously clashed with the roughly ten thousand protestors outside the convention. The police arrested several hundred protestors in total over four days. Additionally, any police officers and protestors were injured during the convention.

The 1968 DNC still haunts Chicago residents to this day, and footage from this convention serves as an ominous reminder for American political observers:

The 2024 DNC

Fifty-six years later, the Democratic party kicked off this year’s DNC in the city of Chicago. On day 1 of the 2024 DNC, Chicago has experienced massive pro-Palestine protests outside the convention. In fact, many people are now comparing this year’s DNC to the 1968 DNC due to these large protests.

Several conservative journalists went on the ground and covered these protests since the Regime media won’t cover them. Here are several videos showing protestors confronting police and breaking down barriers outside the 2024 DNC:

Media outlets have reported that 13 people were arrested during Day 1 of the 2024 DNC. The Chicago police were also able to reinforce barriers that were destroyed by protestors during Day 1 of the DNC.

So far, this year’s DNC protests have not escalated to the level of the 1968 DNC. However, we still have multiple days remaining before the 2024 DNC concludes on Thursday night. Therefore, the situation is tenuous, and we should keep close tabs on these protests to see if they affect voters’ perception of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
