The Florida State Shooting: Yet Another Reminder that Mental Illness and not Guns is the Issue

The left’s obsession with gun control is as bizarre as this belief is predictable. The Democratic party has for decades tried to use every shooting in America about the need for meaningless laws to limit access to firearms. While the facts are clear, more shootings generally occur in states such as Illinois and New York where there are stricter gun regulations, the radicals on the left never let the facts get in these delusional activists’ way.

An even preliminary analysis of the tragic Florida State shooting shows that this attack had nothing to do with gun laws. First, the gunman, Phoenix Ikner, has a developmental disability and also suffered through a difficult childhood that included being essentially kidnapped to another country. Second, the gun used was a handgun, there were no illegal or banned guns that were used to kill or wound any of the victims. Third, Ikner’s victims do not appear to be targeted or chosen with any criteria, they were picked completely randomly. There is no evidence that any of the unconfirmed right-wing political beliefs he had were in any way connected to this shooting, so mentioning them is yet another attempt by the failing legacy media to draw a connection that does not exist. This is also in contrast to the burning down of the governor’s mansion in Pennsylvania by a left-wing activist and the organized attacks on Tesla dealerships that clearly were politically motivated.

The real reason left-wing leaders support gun control is because the Democratic party wants to concentrate power in the hands of government officials, these firearm regulations do not make the public safer. There are more guns than people in the United States, and criminals by definition don’t follow laws, harsher regulations just make obtaining firearms for law-abiding citizens who want to protect themselves and their families more difficult. The facts are also clear that what Democrats refer to as assault weapons have nothing to do with violence in America. These so-called assault weapons are only involved in 4 percent of gun violence. The far bigger factors connected to shootings are family structure and mental illness. In urban areas, where. sadly, much of the gun violence in cities is concentrated in the black community where nearly 80 percent of kids are growing up in single-parent homes without a father in the household. The streets are raising many of these kids.

The fact that a person with a developmental disability who experienced a traumatic childhood chose to gun down victims at random is a clear indication that the mental health system in the United States needs real and significant reform. The apparent fact pattern here does not support new gun laws or the idea that supposed right-wing views were in any way connected to these tragic events, imposing additional regulations will just keep good people from having the ability to protect themselves and their communities. While the usual failing left-wing propaganda outlets such as MSNBC continue to try to use events like this to push a gun control agenda and a narrative that the right is radicalizing people, the actual information shows this event was likely, yet again, an instance of a failing mental health system. The shutdowns and policies enacted at all levels of the government during the pandemic also clearly exacerbated these issues as well.
