What’s This? A Glimmer Of Common Sense From One Democrat?
I almost needed to lie down with an ice pack after learning that one Democrat actually stood up for democracy. Was it an earth-shattering display of resistance? No, but it is wonderful to see that, at least on this one occasion, a Democrat had the guts to take a realistic, common-sense stance.
It isn’t that unusual to see Republicans argue amongst themselves; they do it all the damn time, sometimes to their detriment. However, Democrats who are easily intimidated by the vicious, radical, foaming-at-the-mouth leftists in the party dutifully fall in line and never rock the boat. Their unity is especially infuriating because they vote in unison even if they know what they’re voting for is wrong. It’s a pack mentality that has nothing to do with democracy.
That said, U.S. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez stood up against the bullies in the Democratic Party and argued the very valid point that she could not condone Democrat Illinois Rep. Chuy García’s attempt at “election subversion.”
García, 69, initially filed to run for reelection to represent Illinois’s 4th Congressional District on October 27. However, he later announced his retirement, stating that his family needs him. His wife has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis for more than a decade.
The announcement came after the filing deadline on November 3 had passed, ensuring that his chief of staff, Patty García, would be the only Democrat on the primary ballot to succeed him. Patty García, who is not related to Chuy García, submitted her application to run on November 3rd just before the state board’s deadline at 5 p.m.
This is another example of Democrats believing that rules are for everyone else but not for them. If a Republican had attempted to pull this stunt, it would have been CNN’s lead story. The only reason we are hearing about this is because Perez had the guts to call Garcia out.
Because she did the right thing, Democrats were all over her, attacking her personally and ridiculing her for even bringing the issue up. They wanted to sweep it under the rug, but Perez stood tall and would not fold. The arguments these fools made against Perez are so ridiculous, they should be embarrassed to call themselves representatives of the people, which they most certainly are not.
About a dozen Democratic lawmakers criticized Perez during the debate on her resolution, which was intended to force a floor vote formally rebuking García for effectively selecting his successor in Congress. The Democrat from Washington state stood her ground, arguing that her party must condemn all anti-democratic practices even when they occur within its own ranks.
“You don’t get your cake and eat it too,” Perez said, referring to García’s retirement farce that positioned his chief of staff as the sole Democrat eligible to run in his deep-blue district.
“If you’re not going to run, you don’t get to choose your successor, no matter how noble the work you have done beforehand.”
Perez stood firm in her decision to keep her resolution despite objections from House Democratic leadership and fellow progressive colleagues. On Monday evening, Democratic leaders attempted to table the measure, but their motion failed. In a show of support for the resolution, moderate Democrat Rep. Jared Golden from Maine and all present House Republicans voted to advance it.
Perez Added:
“Once it was clear there would be no Democratic alternative to his chief of staff with a D+17 seat, he announced his retirement. It’s easy to get caught up in the culture of D.C … believing your opponents are so broken that the ends justify the means, but you cannot win the right to represent people through subversion.”
Acting like the childish morons that they are, several of her supposed colleagues personally attacked Perez and jeered as she spoke.
Democratic Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez then insinuated that Garcia always voted the party line, whether good for the people or not, and that Perez should do the same and stop using common sense.
“Chuy Garcia has stood his ground in moments when others have not, including the sponsor of this resolution of disapproval, who has opened the doors to authoritarianism by the way she votes.”
Democratic Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, who is retiring, accused Perez of lacking understanding of Chicago.
Not understanding Chicago? That is a direct reference to the shady politics that have always been associated with the city. Schakowsky is basically saying that Perez is not attuned to playing dirty politics.
Talk about childish, Democratic Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty had the nerve to complain about Perez wearing jeans on the House floor during debate on the measure. Still, it’s fine for John Fetterman to show up for everything in his hooded Lurch outfit.
Democratic strategist Lis Smith posted on X.
“Wearing jeans is a worse sin than subverting an election. Welcome to the gerontocracy in 2025.”
Some Democratic lawmakers contended that García should not face punishment because of his progressive voting record in Congress.
Democrat Rep. Becca Balint from Vermont chimed in, saying:
“I want you to think about the totality of this man’s life. What he’s done in service. This is not a game. It’s a man’s life.”
Perez responded to Balint, stating:
“This is certainly not a game. Nothing validates the choice to subvert an election: not the trespasses of an administration, not the long and noble work of a public servant, not the valid and unknowable bitterness of a family’s suffering, not fidelity to identity politics.”
“The question is: do you have the right to choose your successor?”
Some Democrats argued that the party should focus on opposing the president’s agenda and advocating for their own priorities, rather than forcing the House to vote on a resolution denouncing García.
Democrat California Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove continued demonstrating TDS symptoms while berating Perez’s stance.
“I don’t understand why we are having to debate him. We are in the fight for our lives to make sure that Americans afford the health care that they deserve.”
“This is character assassination.”
Perez responded, saying:
“When it is a spade, you call it a spade, whether it hurts or not. You have to have the confidence that Americans will make the choice for themselves. That is the whole point of this experiment of democracy.”
The vote occurred yesterday afternoon, with the House passing a resolution condemning García for the convenient and self-serving timing of his retirement. Twenty-three Democrats supported the resolution, highlighting the significant divisions within the Democratic Party regarding this issue. The final vote count was 236 in favor, 183 against, and 4 abstentions.
Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio), who supported the resolution, posted on X:
“Voters decide elections, not politicians. We are the voting rights, voter protection, voter empowerment party, and there should never be an exception to that.”
It’s nice that Landsman had a sudden onset of conscience, but the Democrats are certainly not the party of voting rights or voter protection. Had Perez not pressed this issue, no other Democrat would have stood up for the voters’ rights.
Even if the district is deep blue, Garcia had no right to try to shoehorn his choice into the seat. I’m still amazed that a moderate Democrat used common sense and managed to stifle the far left’s attack.
Next, maybe I’ll see a pig fly by my window and hear that the temperature in Hell is dropping.
