The GOP Plan To Make America Affordable Again

The American people are speaking loud and clear: They want affordability, and they want it now. Thankfully, on Jan. 13, Republicans in Congress announced that they’re ready to give families relief. They rolled out a comprehensive plan to make America affordable again.

The credit goes to the Republican Study Committee, under the leadership of Chairman August Pfluger, which represents the overwhelming majority of GOP House members. Since President Trump signed the One, Big, Beautiful Bill into law last summer, they’ve been hard at work developing a second reconciliation bill that’s just as sweeping and urgently needed. Their plan – which is centered on bringing the American Dream into reach for everyone – should be sent to the president’s desk as soon as possible.

Republicans are focused on three big things that directly affect the affordability of daily life: first, home ownership; second, health care and drug prices; third, energy. The reforms they’ve put together will make it easier for families to make ends meet and build a foundation of wealth for themselves and future generations.

On the home ownership front, Republicans want to give Americans the freedom to use more of their money to buy homes. To start, they’d establish Home Savings Accounts, which families can fill with tax-advantaged dollars to cover down payments. They’d also empower families to tap into their retirement accounts, education savings accounts, and health savings accounts to pay for down payments.

That opens up a staggering $46 trillion that Americans already own but could now use to buy a home. And not only could they use this money for their own benefit – they could also help a child or grandchild buy their first home without facing tax penalties. This single reform would make homeownership far more affordable for millions of Americans.

So would the GOP’s proposed tax on foreign homebuyers, who bought more than 78,000 homes between April 2024 and March 2025 – a 33% increase over the previous year. About half those houses were bought with cash, while most first-time homebuying Americans need financing. Foreigners – including many from China, Canada, and Mexico – are crowding out Americans while causing prices to rise. It’s time to level the playing field for our citizens.

Republicans can deliver serious relief on health care, too. Their plan creates a new health care market to run parallel to the failing Obamacare markets. It protects people with pre-existing conditions while ditching Obamacare’s other failed mandates that make insurance unaffordable. My organization estimates that a typical family of four could see up to $7,100 in premium savings per year, while a young, single adult would also pay about 37% less for health coverage.

The GOP is also moving to expand access to Association Health Plans and Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements. These reforms could give tens of millions of workers more affordable insurance plans.

And Republicans also want to mandate that health care providers disclose the cash price they pay for medical treatments, while giving Americans the option to pay that price. The cash price is often a far better deal than the current system, which forces people to pay the enormously inflated prices negotiated by insurance companies.

Finally, Republicans are fighting to give Americans relief from skyrocketing energy bills. Most importantly, they want to require that Congress vote on every big energy regulation that raises costs on consumers and taxpayers. Currently, Democratic presidents unilaterally wrap the energy industry in red tape, contributing to massive price hikes on families. But if Congress is required to vote on those mandates, you can bet that lawmakers would shoot more down. Otherwise, Americans would hold them accountable for making everyday life too costly to afford.

These are just a few of the commonsense reforms that Republicans are offering. They would also stop taxpayer support from going to illegal aliens, ensuring that only Americans get help paying for things like homes and health care. In the wake of the eye-popping fraud scandal in Minnesota, the GOP would also add better protections for federal child care funds going to states. But the bottom line is that Republicans are putting Americans first when it comes to affordability.

The Republican Study Committee deserves praise for crafting such a comprehensive and far-reaching plan. Now the House and Senate need to take up this reconciliation bill as soon as possible, so that President Trump can sign it into law early this year. This is no time for delay in D.C. – not when so many families are struggling to buy homes, afford health care, and stay on top of their bills. People are demanding relief right away, and Republicans can’t miss this chance to finally make America affordable again.
