Virginia Falls Further into Captivity

Virginia, once the undisputed leader amongst the Southern States, is being cut apart and reconstituted in a manner even more vile and reprehensible than what she experienced under the Radical Republicans during the terrible Reconstruction years.

Folks may recall that Virginia fell under complete domination of Leftist Democrats (redundant, we know) after the 2025 elections in that State (House, Senate, and governor). Those officials, as is so often the case with Democrats, wasted no time implementing their โ€˜progressiveโ€™ (i.e., oppressive and un-Christian) agenda. Amongst some of the worst aspects of it that passed the 2026 legislative session:

  • A broad gun control package;
  • A redistricting referendum that would eviscerate Republican representation;
  • Raising the minimum wage to $15/hour;
  • Greatly broadening the retail marijuana market; and
  • Three other constitutional amendments for voters to decide: โ€˜One measure would enshrine reproductive rights in the Constitution, another would automatically restore voting rights to people who have completed felony sentences, and a third would remove Virginiaโ€™s long-dormant ban on same-sex marriageโ€™ (Markus Schmidt, โ€˜The 10 most important things that happened in Virginiaโ€™s 2026 legislative session,โ€™ virginiamercury.com).

It has been noted before by several people, but it is worth repeating again โ€“ that Republicans hardly ever press their electoral victories to this degree. They may push one or two items โ€“ tax cuts or firearms protections or a pro-life measure โ€“ but usually nothing of the comprehensive sort we have just seen in Virginia or that was instituted in Minnesota not long ago.

If Republicans were more than a paper cutout pretending to be a conservative/traditionalist political party, they would be hammering through their own priorities: restricting no-fault divorce, banning same-sex marriage, outlawing pornography, breaking the power of corrupt urban political machines, redirecting welfare programs to benefit married families with children, robustly funding school choice programs, promoting and protecting Christianity, etc.

What we get instead more often than not from the Republican Party are milquetoast, pretty-boy and -girl, fake conservatives like John Thune and Joni Ernst, the stereotypical bonehead jock and airhead cheerleader types lifted out from their junior high and high school settings and placed into what were once serious political institutions. So much the worse for the peoples of the States.

But back to Virginia in particular, what a tragedy! She whose statesmen, once some of the finest in all the States, pronounced about the ability of plain folks to bear arms, for instance:

โ€˜When the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British parliament was advised by an artful man [Sir William Keith], who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people. That it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them. But that they should not do it openly; but to weaken them and let them sink gradually, by totally disusing and neglecting the militiaโ€™โ€”George Mason (โ€˜George Mason Quotes About Right To Bear Arms,โ€™ azquotes.com).

โ€˜The debate over the militia reflected republican concerns over tyranny inherent in standing armies. Having resorted to arms to gain independence, there was little doubt of the value of an armed populace. [Patrick] Henry, in asking whether the state or federal governments would have the responsibility for arming the militia, stated simply that “The great object is, that every man be armed… Everyone who is able may have a gun.”[25] It would have never occurred (p.7) to Henry and the others that the militia was anything other than the body of the people.

โ€˜To the extent that membership in the militia was addressed, it was by George Mason. Mason had long recognized the “Militia… is the natural Strength and only safe & stable security of a free Government.”[26] He posed the question directly:

โ€˜”I ask, Who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officersโ€™ (Thomas Moncure, Jr, โ€˜WHO IS THE MILITIA–THE VIRGINIA RATIFICATION CONVENTION AND THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS,โ€™ guncite.com).

The fall of Virginia to the oppressive Left is a stark warning for Southern and other Red States on two key points:

1) Beware whom you allow to migrate to your State. Virginia has been flooded for years by Yankees and other immigrants who despise the conservative, Christian culture of the South. This could well be the fate of other Southern States soon if conditions donโ€™t change (Georgia, North Carolina, Texas). Louisiana also must be vigilant, as the data centers being built could open the doors for belligerent outsiders to burrow in and undermine the Stateโ€™s good traditions.

2) Take public education out of the hands of the Left. From the teaching of atheistic, Darwinian evolution in grade school and to the deconstruction of Western civilization in colleges, students often fall prey to Leftist ideologies. This obviously makes it more difficult to maintain the healthy customs of conservative States that stretch back over many centuries. Conservatives/Revivalists must energetically and unapologetically promote classes in public schools that teach the positive legacies we have inherited from the ancient Greeks and Romans, from Christianity, and from broader European history.

The conservative people of Virginia have a difficult road ahead of them. The Leftists are often quite merciless towards their political opponents. However, reconquests have

happened in the past: the English expelling the pagan Vikings, the Spanish driving out the long-entrenched Moorish Muslims, eastern Europeans overthrowing communist regimes, etc. With Godโ€™s help, conservative Virginians can replicate these victories in their State. But will they seek Godโ€™s help? Do they even really want this victory? Or will they be content for their inherited culture to dwindle and be swept aside like so much dirt on a sidewalk? We will soon find out what kind of character the good people of Virginia still possess, if it remains what it was in the time of Jefferson, John Taylor of Caroline, and others:

โ€˜And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?โ€™โ€”Thomas Jefferson (โ€˜Thomas Jefferson Quotes About Rebellion,โ€™ azquotes.com)
