Here’s What Iran Is Being Asked To Accept – And Why They Keep Saying No

Pakistanโ€™s โ€œIslamabad Accordโ€ is the most straightforward peace offer Iran has received since the war began. Phase one: an immediate ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz reopening the same day. Phase two: ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ of direct negotiations โ€” proxied through Pakistan, the sole communication channel โ€” toward a comprehensive peace agreement finalized in Islamabad.

What Iran concedes: a ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ง๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ ๐ง๐ฎ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ž๐š๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ, in exchange for sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets held by Western nations for decades.

What the world gets: the reopening of the most critical chokepoint in global energy. The Strait of Hormuz normally carries roughly ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐›๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐จ๐ข๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฒ โ€” ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’% of all global seaborne crude trade (EIA). Its closure has already pushed Brent crude past $๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” ๐š ๐›๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ, the highest in years, in what the Dallas Federal Reserve called the ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ๐ ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐›๐š๐ฅ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ข๐ฅ ๐œ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ. Up to ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ% of internationally traded fertilizers also transit the Strait โ€” meaning food prices are next.

Iranโ€™s track record says they wonโ€™t sign. In March, the U.S. presented a Iran called it โ€œ๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜น๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆโ€ and rejected it within days (Al Jazeera, PBS). Tehranโ€™s counter-demands were staggering: ๐ฐ๐š๐ซ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ paid to Iran, ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ˆ๐ซ๐š๐งโ€™๐ฌ ๐š๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‡๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ, a complete halt to all U.S. and Israeli operations against H-z-b and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, and permanent โ€œ๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ดโ€ that Iran would never be attacked again.

Read those demands again. They want to be ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ for a war they escalated. They want the world to formally recognize their ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ the Strait. They want the U.S. to stop going after their proxy network. And they want a permanent guarantee of immunity.

As of this morning, a senior Iranian official told Reuters they are โ€œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จโ€ the Islamabad Accord but โ€œ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆโ€ โ€” the same language they used before rejecting the 15-point plan. Previous Pakistan-led mediation efforts hit a dead end just three days ago April 3). No official response from Washington either.

Trump has enforced every deadline heโ€™s set. The last time Iran missed one, the strikes followed. Pakistanโ€™s Field Marshal Munir has leverage neither Europe nor the UN ever had โ€” but leverage only works if the other side is rational enough to recognize it.
