Prosecutor Dropped Over Affair With An Illegal, Her Office Was Investigating

According to court documents, a well-known Missouri prosecutor was removed from her position for allegedly having an affair with an Illegal immigrant that her office was investigating for sexual assault, as well as having sex with two other men in cases that created a major conflict of interest.

The disgraced Ray County Prosecutor Camille Johnston was pulled from her position Thursday when a judge signed off on Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanawayโ€™s petition laying out a slew of misconduct allegations against her during her three and a half years in office.

Hannaway alleges that since taking office on January 1, 2023, Johnson has damaged the integrity of her office by having three separate affairs.

Among Johnsonโ€™s affairs, the most damaging, according to court records, involved Johnsonโ€™s one-time live-in boyfriend, a Mexican national who had been in the US illegally since 2019. It is alleged that during that year, she helped him evade being arrested on sexual assault allegations.

The illegal, who is identified as J.G. in court documents, also benefited from Johnsonโ€™s help in 2023, when she drove to Mississippi, where he was hiding out, and gave him her car along with the accompanying vehicleโ€™s title.

It isnโ€™t known when Johnson stopped seeing the illegal. However, what is known is that she never recused herself from the case despite the investigation into his illegal activities. Itโ€™s also known that, at some point, she went on vacation with him to Florida.

Local news outlet KSHB reports that Johnson was dating J.G. when he assaulted the other woman. Still, in court documents, Johnson attempts to refute that insinuation, claiming that she knew nothing about the assault until after the pair had stopped dating. It wasnโ€™t until 2024 that J.G. was finally arrested in Ohio. As of now, he is still awaiting trial on the assault charge.

The accusations in the court documents are clear, stating that Johnson kept her relationship with the illegal, J.G.:

โ€œfrom the victim, law enforcement, her office personnel, and all others, and failed to bring any criminal charges because of her relationship with J.G.โ€

KSHB reported that the details in Hanawayโ€™s petition about Johnstonโ€™s affair with J.G. align with stories published by the outlet in September. These previous reports revealed that the prosecutor had a relationship with a man with the same initialsโ€”Juan David Gutierrezโ€”who was arrested in 2019 for the alleged sexual assault of a woman.

Eventually, Johnson was forced to be disqualified from his case.

Weโ€™ve all heard the expression that there are certain women who are attracted to so-called โ€œBad Boys,โ€ and Johnson takes that to the extreme. In addition to her affair with J.G., it is alleged that she also had one with another domestic-violence suspect, referred to in court papers as C.W. He was charged with domestic violence against his wife, and she is currently still in an affair with a lawyer, referred to in court papers only as T.T., who defended cases she was prosecuting.

To say Johnsonโ€™s โ€œdocketโ€ was full is a huge understatement, although she did have enough time to fire an employee in her office who confronted her about her fling with C.W., the domestic-violence suspect, according to court papers.

In relation to the affair with the lawyer, the two individuals kept their relationship secret, despite the fact that Johnston should have disclosed it every time she and T.T. were on opposing sides of the same case. This would have allowed her to request a special prosecutor to take her place, according to the filing.

A police officer discovered the affair between Johnston and C.W. and requested a special prosecutor to replace her, according to the documents.

Hannaway made her position clear:

โ€œWhen an elected official treats public office like their personal playground, betraying the public trust, ignoring legal obligations, and putting self-interest first, removal isnโ€™t a suggestion; itโ€™s a necessity.โ€

โ€œJohnstonโ€™s record reflects a sustained pattern of misconduct and willful neglect that has undermined the integrity of the prosecutorโ€™s office and poses a serious threat to public safety.โ€

โ€œIn Missouri, public office is public trust, not a personal entitlement, and no one is above accountability.โ€

Itโ€™s obvious that Johnson is giving new meaning to attorney-client privilege. In her case, the privilege appears to extend to just about anyone, including the attorneys for the defendants sheโ€™s trying to prosecute.

Usually in court cases, someone is either found guilty, innocent, or there is a hung jury; in Johnsonโ€™s cases, it appears that everyone gets lucky, especially those who are hung.
