Americans Agree On How Awful The Media Is
It seems that Americans don’t agree on a whole lot these days. But a recent poll shows that Americans do agree that the corporate media is terrible.
A recent New York Times/Siena College poll found that 71% of registered voters believe American democracy is currently under threat. In addition, around 60% of voters view the corporate media as some sort of threat
Voters across all ideological affiliations are united on how awful the press is. 95% of Republicans, 83% of independents, and even 70% of Democrats who think democracy is under threat at least partially blame the press.
Among those who said democracy is under threat, the media was the clear vote winner. It beat out Donald Trump, Joe Biden, both major parties, the Supreme Court, the Electoral College, vote by mail, and voting machines.
This is not the first poll that revealed that Americans don’t like the media. In 2021, the Reuters Institute conducted a survey of news consumers in 46 countries and it revealed Americans had the lowest trust in the press among those surveyed. Just 29% of Americans trusted the media.
Why do I think Americans hate the media? A lot of it is that the American people don’t believe them in general.
Another reason is that it does not present enough perspectives. The corporate media’s left-wing bias is well-known but it has gotten to the point where conservative views are not actually represented by “mainstream” outlets.
It does not help when the press turns the other way when President Joe Biden lies. If the media will not serve as a watchdog and hold our leaders accountable, then it is useless. But if anything there is complaints that the media are being too tough on Joe Biden. Really!?
If the press wants to regain the trust of the American people it needs to become the watchdog to everyone in power. It should also present more perspectives than just those of the left. Otherwise, the American people will rightfully continue to consider it a threat to American democracy.
