Hitler, Eugenics And The Supposed Magic Party Switch
I realized the “Magic Party Switch” was a lie when I became more aware of the Eugenics movement of a hundred years ago.
Of course it smelled funny from the get-go; Republicans become democrats and democrats become Republicans? There would have to be some sort of coordination for that to happen. And a long list of Republicans who became democrats and vice-versa, in the aftermath. To date, I have only heard of Strom Thurmond. But, growing up in a college town, I heard constantly of people on The Left expressing Eugenics-based wishes. Hooray a Republican died that’s one less. Please don’t breed!! And, later on, wishes that George H. W. Bush was never fished out of the ocean, since that would mean he’d be gone and “Dubya” never would have been conceived either.
As frantically as democrats and other leftists wanted to erase the tapestry of history, there was no getting rid of this pedigree line between the Eugenics movement, and Hitler. The most fundamental comprehension of Hitler’s agenda required an understanding of this line. Treating people like horses. Thinning out the undesirables. Please don’t breed!
I don’t see conservatives or Republicans celebrating “one less protester” because of the Renee Good encounter of a week ago. Some may say that’s because the leftists celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination have poor character. That’s certainly true, but it’s also true that “one less protester” doesn’t improve anything. The ICE agents are still being harassed. So maybe on the right wing there is better character, or we could say to be more precise, a valuation of human life. But there’s also a valuation of ultimate results: Even if you don’t value Renee Good’s continued existence, and there certainly are practical reasons not to — her death hasn’t made anything better.
Whereas, on The Left, this is a constant fevered fantasy. So-and-so kicked the bucket, that’s one less. Or, so-and-so *should* and that would be one less. One less here, one less there. Always with the tinkering.
Maybe, if it really worked like that, you’d see some of this on The Right. But, I dunno. Renee Good is no longer with us, I don’t celebrate that. I would prefer she still be alive. I would prefer Rob Reiner, today, would still be alive. Every right-winger I know, would prefer Ms. Good and Mr. Reiner would still be alive. Some for religious reasons, some for practical reasons.
Eugenics is a left-wing thing. A democrat-party thing.
Eugenics was a left-wing democrat-party thing a hundred years ago.
On the big issues, like this, they haven’t switched. In fact, on any of the issues they haven’t switched. In the “higher education” they like to play games with labels, calling Hitler a “fascist” and intoning “fascism is right wing.” The geniuses at Wikipedia like that, and they’re on record refusing to discuss it any further. The trouble is, this doesn’t survive inspection. Without this game-playing with the F-word, I don’t know why Hitler should be put on the right-wing end of the spectrum. And neither do you.
It is the point of philosophical disagreement between the two ends of the spectrum, this tinkering with population density of this-or-that race, bracket of intellectual heft, or economic class. Breeding and un-breeding humans like they’re horses.
No twist. No switch. Not now, not back then, nowhere in between.
