Woke Leftists Need a George McGovern Moment
You hear a lot of talk about civil war these days, and make no mistake, we’re in the middle of a doozy.
But thank goodness it won’t be a shooting war. For that to happen, the military would have to defect, and that’s highly unlikely with the rigid command structure in place. Those on the right have too much to lose to start shooting, and if the left’s riots ever get too far out of control, the president could always invoke the Insurrection Act. The military would easily quash a city-wide riot, or even simultaneous riots in multiple cities.
As Joe Biden once said, you would need an F-16 to challenge the U.S. government.
Leftists won’t riot if one of their own is president, so that leaves us with this ongoing, exhausting, grinding struggle that is fought every day in social media, courthouses, state college campuses, federal legislatures, and in local city and town politics.
And trust me on this, as long as there is parity between the two sides and ideologies, this situation isn’t going to get any better.
The Last Time America Made a Definitive Political Statement
Those who weren’t alive during the late 1960s and early 1970s are going to have to take my word for it that in many ways the political climate back then was worse and even more violent than what we’re experiencing in 2026.
Like today’s woke leftists, the 1970s version stood on sanctimony, moral superiority, and nauseating piousness. Every encounter ended with a lecture, and the themes were largely the same: racism, the environment, the rich have too much, and capitalism sucks. The left preached love and compassion, unless you disagreed with them. Then they wanted to bash in your skull.
The riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago signaled the beginning of the left’s assault and infiltration of the Democrat Party, which culminated in the selection of George McGovern as the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee. He was a leftist socialist Senator from South Dakota, who, unlike many Democrats of his era such as John F. Kennedy, would fit right in with today’s radical Democrat congressional “squad.”
McGovern’s core beliefs included:
* Unilateral Disarmament: McGovern believed that the money spent on the military should be redirected to social programs and global humanitarianism.
* Guaranteed Annual Income: McGovern proposed a $1000 annual “demogrant” to every American to abolish poverty. It was the precursor to the “guaranteed income” concept. Adjusted for inflation, it would be about $8000 per person in 2026 dollars.
* Universal healthcare: For healthcare, McGovern wanted to establish a “national health service” available to any American and fully covered by the federal government.
* Higher Taxes: McGovern wanted to overhaul the tax code and really stick it to the rich under the guise of closing loopholes for corporations and wealthy Americans. As all good leftists do, he wanted to redistribute the revenue to the poor and disadvantaged, no doubt slicing a huge chunk off the top for his Democrat cronies.
Remember, a guy with these kinds of socialist ideas was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972, so it’s important to remember that leftist to impose their authoritarian objectives long before the 21st century. The pervasive attitude within the party at that time was not all that different from the psychotic ramblings of the modern woke leftist movement.
America Made a Decisive Decision that Reverberated for Decades
Think for a moment about the obstacles the Republicans faced in 1972. Their candidate was Richard Nixon, who, until Donald Trump, was the left’s most hated adversary. Nixon carried the baggage of the Vietnam War, which still raged, an economy stuck in price controls and stagflation, and a burgeoning scandal called Watergate.
Yet, in spite of all these headwinds, the results of the 1972 presidential election were staggering. Nixon won 49 states, while McGovern won only Massachusetts. In fact, he didn’t even win his home state of South Dakota. Nixon won 520 electoral votes to McGovern’s 17.
It was a complete and total wipeout of epic proportions.
Notably, it wasn’t that the voting public was so enamored with Nixon; rather, the election was more a referendum on McGovern and his crazy leftist policies and ideas
America wanted no part of it, and as a result, leftists slunk back into the dark shadows of their blue cesspool cities along with their fellow vermin for decades, and America subsequently enjoyed its longest stretch of near-continuous prosperity in its history.
The Siege Won’t End Until America Gives Modern Woke Leftists Their McGovern Moment
Which brings us to today. Over the intervening decades between McGovern and now, leftist ideology hasn’t changed much, but they’ve gotten a whole lot smarter in figuring out how to tilt the game in their favor. Hiding behind the fake narrative of compassion for supposedly oppressed and disadvantaged groups, modern woke leftists have figured out how to infiltrate America’s critical institutions and install their patsies in positions of influence and authority.
They have learned how to subvert elections through manipulation of ballots that aren’t vetted and suspect voting machinery that can be compromised. That is why every other issue pales in comparison to election integrity because unless the left is handed another crushing defeat like McGovern experienced in 1972, they are never going to go away.
It’s not going to be as easy as it was back then when common sense ultimately prevailed. We are going to have to remain determined, diligent, and persuasive if we are going to defeat the leftist movement. It won’t be over until some radical Democrat lunatic is handed a McGovern-size defeat in a presidential election.
