Graham Platner: The News Keeps Getting Worse for the Democrats
The Democratic Party is having an issue vetting candidates. While disgraced former Congressman Eric Swalwell recently was forced to resign after his sexual misconduct was exposed, the Democrats also now face a crisis in the Maine Senate race with the troubled nominee of the party, Graham Platner. The disabled military veteran is set to take on longtime incumbent Susan Collins in November, but after just recently securing the nomination, he’s already running into significant and continued problems. Indeed, there is now talk that the Democrats may even try to use a unique law in the state to remove him before the upcoming general election.
Platner was always an interesting candidate with some eccentricities, such as a Nazi tattoo he claims to have gotten when dealing with PTSD issues after leaving the military, but the new controversies the left-wing politician faces are more significant. In addition to trashing some former military vets, there is now a sexting scandal that is coming out. Apparently, the married man was exchanging sexually explicit text messages with a number of women, and his wife flagged these exchanges. The Oyster farmer also already admitted to putting out several text messages that advocated violence, stating essentially that fascism should be met with a rifle. Given that many Democrats absurdly referred to Trump and the MAGA movement in similar extreme terms, these statements are correctly seen as advocating for the use of political violence.
There were already questions about Platner’s life story as well. The left-wing populist claims to be from a working-class family despite coming from wealth and attending at $75,000 a $75,000-a-year boarding school. His comments about going after businessmen such as Jeff Bezos were framed oddly as well. While Amazon is a huge company that has credibly been alleged to have engaged in some anti-trust abuses, openly saying he was going to go after the founder of the internet retailer seemed misplaced to many. Platner has also received significant financial assistance from his wealthy family members even as an adult, although he claims not to make much money from his oyster farming business. The Democratic candidate for Senate also receives nearly $70,000 a year in disability benefits related to his military service.
The Democratic Party has tended to seek out more populist candidates to confront Republicans in states such as Texas and Maine, and many of these individuals had a very limited political track record. There are increasing signs that the party simply did not fully vet them in the primaries. Indeed, the only real requirement to win many Democratic primaries appears to be stating to be an anti-Trump politician, and who these politicians really are and what they stand for does not appear to be nearly as important to many voters as it should have been. The governor of the state, Janet Mills, was also a weak candidate, and the voters of the state were left with very limited options by the time the Democratic primary came around, enabling Platner to prevail.
The left has been fiercely passionate to find politicians who can win key races with the Democratic Party determined to take on Trump and the MAGA movement, and this desperation has clearly led to candidates not being properly vetted in both state and national races across the country. Indeed, the fact that Swalwell’s extensive sexual misconduct wasn’t exposed until he became the frontrunner for California’s position of governor shows the complicity and desperate nature of left-wing politicians and their allies in the failing corporate liberal media. While Platner may still be removed before Maine’s important Senate race, his nomination highlights the poor overall quality of Democratic candidates in many key states.
