Why Contemporary Country Music Smells Bad

The people in the audience of the Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM) ceremony are mind-numbed robots who will cheer for anything or anybody on that stage, no matter how good or bad that personโ€™s music is.

This is true of the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards ceremony as well as the yearly CMA fest held every summer in Nashville.

Who is the latest pop Country sensation anyway? Chelsea, Kelsea, Melsea, Belsea, Delsea, something-or-other? What boy who grew up in Americaโ€™s suburbs grew up to sing a song about fishing, hunting, drinking beer, or loving Linda Lou so he could firmly establish his Country Music Bona fideโ€™s? I honestly canโ€™t keep up anymore.

Audience members are sheep who scream like banshees. Most of this music they cheer for is so bad it was probably written by artificial intelligence (AI). I just canโ€™t imagine Johnny Cash or Hank Williams Sr. grabbing a pen and paper and writing generic, cookie cutter crap like this that may as well have come off an assembly line.

Last Sunday night, Shania Twain appeared on stage. I blame her for Country Music taking a wrong turn 30 years ago. Before she came along, the industry awarded contracts to singers based on talent instead of looks.ย

We may indeed have contemporary pop Country Music in 10 years. But no one remembers any of the contemporary Pop Country Music songs from the 1990s, the 2000s or the 2010s. In five years no one will remember the contemporary pop Country Music songs that are popular today.ย

Once these Country/pop singers lose their looks theyโ€™re going to get banished to a dinner theater in Branson, Mo.

I realize that the music industry is a business. I also realize that the executives who oversee this industry cater to the needs, wants, and tastes of young people, specifically the 18-35-year-old demographic. I understand that these executives have to make money. And I also understand that the 18-35-year-old demographic is the one that spends the most money, thus making them the most attractive to advertisers.

But you young people are very undemanding in terms of what your standards and expectations are.

Do better.

Iโ€™m not complaining. Iโ€™m just observing.

All of your people 35 and older know that Iโ€™m right.

This music smells bad.

Somebody play some Waylon Jennings before the rest of this stuff stinks up the joint.
